Ukraine claims to be investigating 5,600 alleged Russian war crimes

On Sunday, a senior Ukrainian official stated that the country is investigating the claimed responsibility of 500 Russian leaders for thousands of war crimes, including President Vladimir Putin.
Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his surprise visit to Kyiv on Saturday, according to a report on Sky News in the United Kingdom.

In face-to-face talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Johnson pledged greater military assistance from the United Kingdom, before the duo had a closely guarded promenade around central Kyiv.

With the president by his side, Johnson stated in broadcast remarks, “I believe that Ukrainians have demonstrated the courage of a lion, and you, Volodymyr, have given the thunderous roar of that lion.”

Venediktova praised Johnson’s visit, saying it provided “really fantastic support for us.” She went on to describe alleged crimes committed by Russian invaders, including at a railway station packed with fleeing refugees, which she described as “horrific.”

“Of course, what we witness on the ground in all of Ukraine’s regions constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity,” the prosecutor continued in English, adding that “war crimes and crimes against humanity” were being committed.

She stated that there was “complete evidence” linking Russian forces to the missile attack on the Kramatorsk train station in eastern Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of at least 52 people, according to officials.

According to Venediktova, “that’s why it will be one of the cases in our high-profile series.”

“You are aware that we have launched 5,600 investigations in Ukraine into the aforementioned war crimes,” she stated, adding that “500 suspects” from the Russian government and military had been identified.

Vladimir Putin is the most important war criminal of the twenty-first century, according to the official, who also noted that, as president, he may be exempt from prosecution under international law, but that immunity would not endure indefinitely.

Zelensky announced a week ago that he had established a “special mechanism” to examine Russian “war crimes” in Ukraine, vowing to find and punish “everyone” who was culpable.

According to him, the mechanism would be comprised of national and international experts, investigators, prosecutors, and judges.

British experts have been working alongside those from other countries to assist the International Criminal Court in The Hague in conducting its own probe into the Ukraine incursion.

Asked about the discovery of civilian deaths in Ukrainian cities including as Bucha and Irpin, Johnson claimed the discovery of human dead had “permanently stained” Putin’s reputation and amounted to war crimes.
