A long-awaited all-in-one ecommerce app, allowing users to purchase everything from apparel to airline tickets, will be launched by the $103 billion Tata Group, as the sprawling Indian conglomerate competes for a piece of the fiercely competitive sector currently dominated by Amazon.com Inc., Walmart Inc., and Reliance Industries Ltd, according to a statement.
It was announced on Thursday that the digital services platform, Tata Neu, operated by Mumbai-based Tata Digital Pvt. will go live to consumers. According to the group’s website, the platform will have in-house brands including Croma, Westside, AirAsia India, the Taj chain of luxury hotels and BigBasket. As described on the website as a “super-app” and expected to be released by the middle of 2020 at the very latest, it is described as “a unified platform that unites several businesses across the Tata universe like never before.”

It wants to use the diversity of its products and services to attract buyers in a country with nearly 1.4 billion people who are increasingly shopping online. The 154-year-old Tata group, which manufactures luxury cars, trucks, air conditioners, smart watches, tea, as well as operating luxury hotels, airlines, utilities, department stores, and a local Starbucks Corp. franchise, wants to leverage its diversity of products and services to attract buyers in a country with nearly 1.4 billion people who are increasingly shopping online. e-commerce in India is estimated to be valued up to $140 billion by March 2026, according to projections by Bain & Company. It is the only significant consumer market in the world that is still open to international corporations, making it a prize fight for both global and local retail companies.

The all-in-one software will include a customer retention program to keep users coming back. Accord to the website, each brand on Tata Neu is “linked by a common reward called NeuCoins, which can be earned across all brands both online and in real locations, and may be used in the same way as NeuCoins.”

It was closely monitored by Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of the main holding firm Tata Sons Pvt., who has been a proponent of the group’s digitalization drive for a number of years. Pratik Pal, the chief executive officer of Tata Digital, which developed Tata Neu, has worked with some of the world’s leading retailers, including Walmart, Tesco Plc, Target Corp., Best Buy Co., and Marks & Spencer Group Plc, to assist them improve their businesses through digital transformation.

According to expectations, the acquisition of Tata Neu will provide the Indian conglomerate with greater strength against entrenched competitors such as Amazon, billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance, and Walmart-owned Flipkart. This group, founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868, has 29 publicly traded firms operating in eleven industries, including steel and autos; technology; consumer retail; infrastructure; financial services; trading; defense; travel and tourism. Tata Group is headquartered in Mumbai, India.
