According to a filing with the Federal Communications Commission, SpaceX is preparing to launch a Starship prototype into orbit, buoyed by the recent successful landing of SN15.

A reusable, two-stage super heavy lift launch vehicle (referred to simply as Starship) will launch from SpaceX’s South Texas launch facility Starbase on an as-yet unannounced date, according to the document’s details.

If everything goes according to plan, the Super Heavy booster should separate approximately three minutes into the flight, splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico approximately twenty miles from shore. During this time, the Starship rocket should continue its trip, travelling over the Straits of Florida before achieving orbit and landing back on Earth—about 62 miles off the northwest coast of Kauai, Hawaii—in what the filing described as a “soft ocean landing.” There should be no more than 90 minutes between the time of liftoff and the time of ship splashdown.

According to the company’s document filed with the Federal Communications Commission, “SpaceX intends to collect as much data as possible during flight to quantify entry dynamics and better understand what the vehicle experiences in a flight regime that is extremely difficult to accurately predict or replicate computationally.” “This data will serve as a foundation for any changes in vehicle design or CONOPs [concept of operations] that occur after the first flight, as well as for the development of better models for use in our internal simulations.”

It is anticipated that the Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket will be capable of transporting more than 100 tonnes of crew and cargo to Earth orbit, as well as Mars and other destinations in space.

Recently, SN15 successfully completed SpaceX’s fifth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas—all without erupting in a ball of flames like the previous four. Starship is conducting “test flights” in order to “further our understanding and development of a totally reusable transportation system built [for] long-duration interplanetary journeys,” according to the company’s website.
