Based on the hard-hitting book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ by S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ tells the story of Ganga’s ascent to power and renown from a demure small-town girl in Gujarat to the undisputed queen of kamathipura in Mumbai. Gangubai Kathiawadi Movie Review

In the bustling bylanes of south Mumbai’s famed red-light district Kamathipura, there is a scenario that is real, terrible, and dramatic: women invitingly standing at the threshold of a kotha (brothel). The film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and set largely against the harsh backdrop of Mumbai, portrays the narrative of numerous young women who were sold off to brothels for a few hundred rupees, purely through the eyes of its protagonist Gangubai, who grows up in a brothel (Alia Bhatt).

Ganga (Varun Kapoor) is a starry-eyed and naive young woman who is deceived by her own lover Ramnik (Varun Kapoor) into eloping with the promise that he will pave the way for her to make it as a heroine in Bollywood. The film takes place sometime in the early 1950s or 1960s. However, as we all know, it is Ganga (who later rechristens herself as Gangu and finally Gangubai) who ends up being the heroine of Kamathipura rather than the other way around. Over the course of several years, Kamathipura becomes her home, the brothel girls her family, and the entire city of Kamathipura becomes her territory. She faces a number of obstacles, including opponents and a societal shame, which forces her to summon her inner fighter to survive.

The film’s strength is in the way it portrays Gangu’s character’s transformation as she progresses through several periods of her life. However, despite the fact that the narrative takes time to build up and even slows down at times, it does so without failing to make an effect through hot conversation and poignant situations.

As the bosslady in a world full of brothels and insatiable men, Alia Bhatt steals the show in her one-woman performance. After a time, it may be difficult to accept Alia’s portrayal of the character; nevertheless, by the conclusion of the film, you’ll find yourself rooting for her – especially when you watch her deliver dialogue with sublime confidence, daring, and a killer instinct.

Even in his brief appearance as Rahim Lala, Ajay Devgan makes a lasting impression. The rest of the supporting actors, including Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz, and Jim Sarbh, do their finest work, but they aren’t given much opportunity to shine on their own. As Gangu’s love interest, Shantanu Maheshwari gives a strong performance, and the bittersweet moments between Gangu and him are some of the most memorable scenes in the film.

Similarly to a novel, Bhansali pushes his story with each task and episode moving forward like a chapter in the book. We are left wanting to know more about Gangu’s life after the film, despite the fact that there is a lot crammed into the film – such as how she transforms into an activist for women in Kamathipura, her interface with the city’s underbelly, and her political aspirations — and how it all unfolded. In Bhansali’s signature style of finesse and flair, there are some heartbreaking moments that are beautifully crafted and conveyed to the audience. However, the narrative does not delve deeply into any one aspect of Gangu’s life. The overall production value is excellent. With each song, the visuals are brilliantly and vibrantly depicted – even as Gangu stands out like a vision in white in the middle of everything. However, with the exception of Dholida, none of the songs stand out as particularly remarkable.

In the same way that every other Bhansali picture has been, this one is also a visual treat. Even though the camera captures the gloomy alleyways of Mumbai’s red-light district, it does it with opulence and plenty of gloss. There are some heartbreaking facts about our culture and the lives of sex workers that are brought to the forefront by the story, and it raises some difficult and pertinent topics, but there is a lot about her life that has been left out. There are some extremely emotional situations and clap-worthy phrases that keep you involved throughout the film, which feels much longer than its running time. As a result, long after you have left the theatre, the larger-than-life world that Bhansali has created with his vision stays in your memory, and the mystery surrounding Gangubai’s tumultuous existence piques your attention even further.

So, if you’re looking for a genuine glimpse inside Gangubai’s life, popularly known as Mumbai’s Mafia Queen, you’ll be left wanting more after watching this documentary. However, even with everything that is packed into this drama, there are enough moments that will draw you into this world where the nights seem to last forever and the lights never go out to keep you entertained.
